Nurjahan and Jahangir

Nur Jahan, Born as Mehr-un-Nissa, was 20th and most favorite wife of Mughal emperor Jahangir. Jahangir lover her charm and was taken by her charm that he killed her husband to get hold of her. After the incident she was shocked and refused his proposal for 6 years. Later she realized Jahangir’s love for her and consented to marry him. She was also his chief consort, and later ruled for almost 20 years!

Mirza and Sahiba

Mirza, the son of a Kharal Jat land baron and Sahiba, the daughter of the chief of Kheewa of Sial tribe, depicts another Punjabi folk tale. They grew up together and fell in love. Later on, Mirza had to go back to his home town and in the meantime Sahiba was forced to marry someone else. She was upset and wrote a letter to Mirza to come save her. Mirza came to rescue and carried her away during the mehandi ceremony. But this was not the end, Sahiba’s brothers chased them and Killed Mirza with a sword. When Sahiba saw this she killed herself with Mirza’s sword and the lovers became immortalized in folk history.

Baji Rao and Mastani

They have one of the most interesting love story in history. Bajirao was a Peshwa (Prime Minister) to the fourth Maratha emperor, Mastani was the daughter of a Hindu king, Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundela. Bajirao fell in love with Mastani after he protected Mastani’s father family and kingdom. He married her in spite of being married to Kashibai, and took her in as second wife. When later during the war, Bajirao was sick during a military campaign in Khargon, and died, Mastani was broken and she immediately committed suicide by consuming poison.

Sohni and Mahiwal

Another Punjabi folk tale that shows love is of Sohni Mahiwal. Sohni, the daughter of a potter and Mahiwal, a buffalo herder. Sohni was forced to marry another potter due to high caste but her love for Mahiwal drove her to swim across a river to meet Mahiwal. She took an earthern pot to swim across the river but her sister in law replaced the baked earthen pot with an unbaked one. Because of the unbaked clay pot she drowned in the river. Seeing her drown, Mahiwal also jumped in the river and drowned.

Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal

Their love produced a monument that is famous all over the world – Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal were Mughal Royal couple. After giving birth to 14th child, Mumtaz died. Shah Jahan was broken by this incident of her wife’s death. It affected him both emotionally and physically. But at the same time it was an inspiration for him. He build one of the world’s greatest architectural masterpieces that was a final resting for his beloved wife. After a little while, he got I’ll and was thrown by his eldest son. The late of his life he spend in house arrest and was buried next to his wife.

Mumal and Mahendra

An immortal rajput love story of a beautiful Rajput girl, Mumal and Rana Mahendra of Umer Kot. Their love started when once Mahendra came near Mumal’s abode while hunting and Mumal decided to take him as her consort. He visited Jaisalmer on a fast camel that would take him to Jaisalmer and back from Umer kot each night. His family tried to destroy his efforts, but Mahendra without fail went to jaisalmer. One day he accidentally reached Barker instead. Mumal was waiting for him and in the meanwhile her sisters dressed up to entertain her. Mahendra was on his way to Jaisalmer and in the meanwhile the girls slept. One of Mumals friends dress up as men slept with her in bed. When Mahendra saw this he felt disgusted and went back.
Mumal’s pleadings went in vain, and she proved her innocence by jumping into a fire. When Mahendra came to know about this, he rushed to her but she was already in flames. To be with her forever, Mahendra joined her in the fire.

Amrapali and Bimbisara

Amrapali is a famous discipline of Budha and the famous courtesan of Vaisali. When King Bimbisara of Magadha attacked Vaisali, he came to know about Amrapali’s fame and, came to see her dance. Both fell in love with each other. But Amrapali declined to come with Bimbisara as
she has promised the citizens that she would never marry. Instead, she asked him to save her city if his love was true, and later joined Buddha to attain peace.

Anarkali and Salim

Immortal love story of the Mughal prince Salim, and the courtesan Anarkali. Salim’s declared a war against akbar, his father, Akbar won the war. To save Salim, Anarkali sacrificed herself by being entombed alive!

Heer and Ranjha:

Who doesn’t know about Heer and Ranjha, one of the most popular of the Punjabi folk tales. Ranjha, a Punjabi Jat who played magical flute. He traveled around when he was forced to leave his home, and reached Heer’s village and fell in love with her. Heer fell in love with his flute playing while he did the job of taking care of her father’s cattle. After years of meeting secretly they were caught and he was forced to leave. He went and became a Jogi and renounced the world. Meanwhile Heer got married to Saida Khera. After a few years the Jogi Ranjha appeared up in Heer’s village again. They ended up with each other but Heer’s jealous uncle poisoned the food at their wedding day which killed Heer. Ranjha then purposely ate the poisoned food to commit suicide alongside Heer.
